David Bruen apologized for wearing the shirt and said the focus should be on Black and Brown students who celebrated the event.

Last Tuesday evening, Feb. 8, The Daily Orange reached out to me for a comment on my wearing a shirt that says “I am Black History,” which was distributed at the Black History Month Kickoff, an event proudly co-sponsored by the Student Association.

I wore this shirt as an expression of my solidarity with the Black community and the Black History Month Kickoff in particular. Black History Month is an opportunity to recognize the impact of Black people across the globe and in all of our lives. As a white student in a predominantly white organization on a predominantly white campus, I was impassioned to show my support. After the event, people told me that they appreciated my presence that night.

When Darnelle and I ran together, we led a deeply intentional campaign and have continued that approach with our administration. In SA, we formed an ad-hoc committee to provide a report on the university’s DEIA plan, expanded our menstrual product initiative to provide more free products in gender-neutral bathrooms and launched our grocery store trolley program to support students who are looking for fresh produce.

We should talk about the night of the celebration last week, when so many Black and Brown students were filled with joy in celebration of their culture and history. We should focus on the historical inequities that continue to harm the Black community. We should talk about how Black students have fought for transformational changes on this campus and beyond.

We have to own up to the ills and inequities of our society just as much as the good. I solemnly hold that truth with me everywhere I go, especially at an event celebrating Black History Month. So, if this or any of my actions have harmed you, I am sincerely sorry.

I will continue to show up for the student body, not just one part of it — but all of it. Because that is what a leader does.

Forever in Solidarity,
David Bruen
Student Association President
